Notes - September 21, 2004

St Lawrence Centre Arena, Massena, NY 13622

  1. Present: Bill Mein (Potsdam FSC), Linda McDonald (Massena FSC), and Brenda Gravander (Potsdam FSC)
  2. Old Business:
    1. Calendar Updates. The calendar is located at http://www.northerncouncil.org. Our web site is updated as items are given to Bill. Competition dates are posted on the U.S. Figure Skating web site when they receive the completed sanction application. Bill submits test dates to U.S. Figure Skating to be posted on their web site.
    2. Northern Council reimbursements and awards. Item was not discussed.
    3. Northern Council ByLaws update. Item was not discussed.
  3. New Business:
    1. Report of Action by Executive Committee at its August 6-7, 2004 meeting in Colorado Springs.
      1. Item: APPROVED to establish a registration fee of $50 for Governing Council Meeting delegates and/or proxy holders, beginning in 2005. (9 Yes)
Item: APPROVED to establish a registration fee of $75 for those attending Governing Council Meetings as observers, beginning in 2005. (9 Yes)

The fee is established to try to offset the expense of the meeting. Members felt that since many pay their own way to attend Governing Council, they should not have to pay an entry fee.
      2. Item: APPROVED to reduce the grant for the U.S. Collegiate Championships to $1000, beginning in Budget Year 2006-2007. (9 Yes)

The current budget is $30,000. This will radically change the nature of this competition. It will probably have to be done in conjunction with another competition.
    2. Northern Council secretary. In a moment of weakness Brenda agreed to serve as secretary for the year - thanks Brenda!
    3. Nominating worksheet. The worksheet was discussed. Clubs are encouraged to send any recommendations to the nominating committee - they are always looking for suggestions.

    4. Attendance at Northern Council meetings. Attendance at meetings is a problem - what to do?
      1. Disband Northern Council.
      2. Don't meet as often.
      3. Have just an advisory board.
      4. Just the executive committee meet.
      5. Agreed to send a questionnaire to each club/delegate to:
        1. ask why they do not attend Northern Council meetings.
        2. ask what the club wishes to get from Northern Council.
        3. ask if there is a better meeting time and if so what it is.
        4. ask what the club feels Northern Council's objectives should be.
        5. ask what the club feels Northern Council should do and isn't.
        6. send us names/addresses/emails of the club's officers and delegates.

Brenda and Bill will put the questionnaire together. Linda will make copies and mail them - with a stamped return envelope addressed to Linda.

  4. Announcements: None.
  5. Club Comments:
  6. Next Meeting: October 19th, 2004. Cheel arena, Potsdam, NY 13699.
